Road to Championship

1. New Traits — Current Stage

Phoenix Maine Coons are currently being documented and exhibited in TICA's New Traits Class.

The Phoenix Collaborative Project tracks qualifying exhibition participation, TICA members, and registered cats in preparation for advancement.

2. Exhibition & Membership Requirements
Exhibition — 10 individual cats
  • At least 10 individual examples of the Phoenix trait must have been exhibited in New Traits.
  • Each cat counts once, regardless of how many shows it attends.
  • Only documented, confirmed participation is included in the tracker.
Membership — 10 members
  • At least 10 TICA members in good standing must actively breed and/or exhibit the Phoenix trait.
  • Active breeding requires producing a litter within the two years preceding the application.
  • Documented New Traits exhibition is another qualifying activity.
  • Ownership or registration alone does not establish active participation.
  • Only one person per co-owned litter or cattery may qualify under the applicable active-breeder provision.

The advancement application also requires signatures from at least 10 TICA members in good standing. Final eligibility is subject to TICA verification.

3. Qualifying Registrations
Working target — 50 cats
  • Qualifying cats must express the Phoenix trait and be registered with TICA.
  • Registrations must fall within the three years preceding the application.
  • Each individual cat counts once.
  • Registration alone does not satisfy the New Traits exhibition requirement.

Important: The three-year eligibility window moves with the application date. Registrations can become ineligible if the application is delayed.

The project uses 50 as its working target, subject to confirmation of the applicable TICA registration threshold.

4. Application & Approval Timeline

The following stages outline the advancement process and the deadlines associated with a selected TICA Board meeting.

Phase 1 · Before filing

Complete eligibility documentation

Confirm qualifying exhibitions, active TICA members, and registrations. Collect supporting records, member signatures, and any proposed Maine Coon breed-standard changes.

Check the rolling three-year registration window and two-year active-breeder window against the intended application date.

Phase 2 · Before the 120-day deadline

Arrange TICA TREND publication

Contact the TICA TREND to arrange publication of the required Notice of Intent to Apply for Advancement to Championship Status.

Magazine submission deadlines may fall earlier than the formal 120-day requirement.

Phase 3 · At least 120 days before Board meeting

Submit application and publish notice

Distribute the completed electronic New Trait Advancement to Championship application to every member of the Maine Coon Breed Committee and every member of TICA's Genetics and Rules Committees.

Include at least 10 signatures from TICA members in good standing, supporting documentation, and any required proposed standard changes.

The Notice of Intent must also be published in the TICA TREND within the required timeframe.

Phase 4 · Committee review

Genetics and Rules Committee review

The Genetics Committee evaluates the proposed trait, while the Rules Committee reviews compliance with applicable requirements.

Obtain the required approvals and comments before the application advances.

Phase 5 · At least 90 days before Board meeting

Breed Committee Chair forwards application

Following the required committee approvals, the Maine Coon Breed Committee Chair forwards the application and committee comments to TICA's Executive Office for Breed Section polling.

Phase 6 · Within 30 days of ballot issuance

Breed Section voting

The Executive Office arranges polling of eligible Breed Section or Breed Group members. Ballots must be returned within 30 days of issuance.

The applicable voting approval is required before advancement can proceed.

Phase 7 · Scheduled Board meeting

TICA Board review and decision

The Board reviews the advancement application, committee recommendations, and voting results before deciding whether to approve Championship status.

Meeting numerical requirements does not guarantee approval.

Phase 8 · May 1 of the ensuing year

Championship recognition becomes effective

If the advancement is approved, Championship recognition takes effect on May 1 of the ensuing year, in accordance with TICA Standing Rule 303.5.
